Renting an Apartment in SWCC
What You Should Know
Southwest Center City (SWCC) is a neighborhood in the southern section of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The neighborhood is bordered on the
north by South Street, on the south by Washington Avenue, on the west by the
Schuylkill River, and by Broad Street on the east. It is also known as the
Graduate Hospital area , or South of South (SoSo).
It is rich in history, architectural landmarks, and charming nineteenth-century
townhouses. A transitional area between Center City and South Philadelphia, it
is home to several community service organizations, many churches, retail
establishments and light industry. The neighborhood began taking shape after the
Civil War. In 1870, it was predominantly Irish, but that lasted just a
generation. By 1910, most of the residents were southern blacks. To this day it
is a a solid working-class neighborhood with church-loving people (13 churches).
In recent years the area has experienced exponential growth and gentrification
with hundreds of condo units and dozens of new retail establishments.
