Lansdowne (sometimes erroneously spelled "Landsdowne" or confused
with Lansdale, much to the ire of its residents) is a borough in
Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is essentially a
residential suburb of Philadelphia. Population in 1900, 2,630; in 1910,
4,066; and in 1940, 10, 837. The population was 11,044 at the 2000
census. Lansdowne is located 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Philadelphia.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total
area of 3.1 km� (1.2 mi�), all land.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 11,044 people, 4,724 households,
and 2,749 families residing in the borough. The population density was
3,613.7/km� (9,382.0/mi�). There were 4,999 housing units at an average
density of 1,635.7/km� (4,246.7/mi�). The racial makeup of the borough
was 75.25% White, 18.98% African American, 0.09% Native American, 2.87%
Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 2.37% from
two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the
population.
There were 4,724 households out of which 27.0% had children under the
age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together,
12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were
non-families. 34.9% of all households were made up of individuals and
12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The
average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the borough the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of
18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and
13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.
For every 100 females there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age
18 and over, there were 82.8 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $47,017, and the
median income for a family was $60,305. Males had a median income of
$42,475 versus $35,257 for females. The per capita income for the
borough was $25,177. About 3.6% of families and 5.4% of the population
were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and
8.2% of those age 65 or over.
