population was 7,393 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of
3.7 km˛ (1.4 mi˛), all land.
The Borough of Hatboro is a small municipality that is surrounded by Upper
Moreland Township and Warminster Township. The Pennypack Creek runs through the
center of town under Route 263 (York Road) and through the municipality.
History
* Hatboro's name originates from town being the leading exporter of hats to
Great Britain during colonial times.
* The Revolutionary War Battle of Crooked Billet was fought on May 1, 1778 in
Hatboro.
* During the summer of 1777, George Washington and his officers ate dinner at
the Crooked Billet Tavern.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,393 people, 3,041 households, and
1,955 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,010.2/km˛
(5,217.5/mi˛). There were 3,121 housing units at an average density of 848.6/km˛
(2,202.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough was 95.74% White, 1.95% African
American, 0.14% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.58% from other races, and 0.54%
from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the
population.
There were 3,041 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female
householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.8% of all
households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who
was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the
average family size was 3.07.
In the borough the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18,
6.6% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were
65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females
there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4
males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $44,901, and the median
income for a family was $58,063. Males had a median income of $37,291 versus
$30,934 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $21,911. About
1.8% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line,
including 3.4% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.
